My Fairy Garden In A Pot [Jul. 7th, 2007|09:47 am]
[mood | impressed]

Have a few plants left over that never got planted still sitting in the plastic pack (like me)? Make a fairy garden! See the little cat sleeping on the bench and the mini pond with a walk in between? I put this together in less than a half hour. This would be a great summer project for kids!  A couple more pics are in my Garden 2007 gallery.

More Pics Added [Jul. 1st, 2007|12:34 pm]
[mood | lazy]

I FINALLY added more pics to my 2007 gallery.

http://pics.livejournal.com/garden_goodies/

And where did all the hummingbirds go?!?!?!  I saw one early in the season checking out one of my feeders and now NONE.  I'm just wasting sugar.  :o(  Maybe when the flowers bloom they'll start coming again.  Last year I put out the feeders late in the season and I think we got those that were passing through; flying to a warmer climate for the Winter.

Update On The Pool [Jun. 6th, 2007|12:56 pm]

Completed - For This YearCompleted - For This Year

I think I'm done messing with the 30 gal. pool we sunk into the ground on the patio this Spring; at least for this year. I'm not sure if I'm going to put any of my large goldfish in it after all. After all the rain we had, I had to scoop all the water out of it yesterday and clean it and re-fill it. It wasn't as bad of a job as I thought it would be, but in doing that you mess up the biological filter that would effect the goldfish that I'd have to remove and put back in after cleaning. We'll see...Without goldfish in it though, you don't have to worry about it as much if it gets yucky and ya can take your time cleaning it out.

Last night after we got home from the gym it was dark and I decided to go look at it with the pool light floating in it. I had to strain my eyes to determine what the dark figure was. I didn't think it was the fountain head, but it was close to it. As I looked closer I could see that it was a baby bird that was perched over the water near the fountain head on a twig that I'd placed so it would be close to the water for birds to land on and get a drink. We already had one baby bird fall into it a couple of weeks ago and drown so I certainly wasn't going to leave it there to maybe do the same. I guess the mother bird left it. :o( I put on some garden gloves and scooped it up and you should have heard the thing yell. All the while hubby and I had been looking at it it didn't seem to be afraid. I put the screaming thing in a small bush outside the fence and he was gone this morning. I doubt he lives long though. I'm thinking she left him 'cause he couldn't learn to fly.

Whimsical [Jun. 6th, 2007|12:48 pm]

WhimsicalWhimsical

I bought this fountain a couple of years ago maked-down at the end of Summer. I was disappointed to discover that the paint wore away in places in only a couple of months. :o( The bottom though is real, stained glass in a mosaic iris pattern so I decided to use it again this year anyway. It's my whimsical corner of the patio.

New Pics [Jun. 4th, 2007|11:24 am]
[mood | rushed]

I added 10 more pics to the 2007 Gallery.  The sun was so bright and in the East that the pics aren't that good.  For some reason either I'm just not into taking pics this year or I'm being unlucky 'cause none are as good as last year's.  :o(  I do know I'm not spending as much time cropping and labeling the pics this year.  Sorry...But, you get the idea...

I haven't seen a single hummingbird since the very first one I saw a couple of weeks ago.  :o(  Maybe when my flowers bloom, I'll see them coming to the feeders again like late in the season last year.

I did get everything that I bought this year planted (which was mostly seeds).  I took pics a little over a week ago, and I just haven't taken the time to upload them into my 2007 ScrapBook.   But, I will... Now, just short of a week , all of the seeds have sprouted.  I was shocked that it took only a week to see stuff coming-up - and like I said, a bit less than a week at that.

UPS dropped off a huge box today for ME at our house.  It was waiting for me on the porch after coming back from having lunch with hubby and after doing some groc. shopping.  It was from my brother - early birthday gift/gifts.  I got LOTS of things from him and most all that I liked/wanted -  all tucked inside another gift!  This...

http://www.earthbox.com/index.php   An Earth Box  :o)  I can't wait to get it up and going.

They're Back [May. 16th, 2007|07:58 am]

[mood | giddy]

Yesterday I saw our first hummingbird to our feeders.

It appeared to be just checking out 2 of our 3 feeders that I put out. about a week or so ago.  After he left,  I ran out and brought them all in to clean and refill which I hadn't done yet.  Right now I'm doing that weekly.  When it gets hot I'll have to do it about twice a week.

Yesterday it was rainy  off and on, and I've noticed that I see them out and about esp. then.

I filled and put out my hummingbird feeders (in the same place they were last year) about a week or so ago and so far no birds.  :o(

I  also bought an oriole feeder + nectar mix at the end of the seaon last year, but haven't put it up and probably won't - not this year anyway.

New, Small, Kidney Pool For 2007New, Small, Kidney Pool For 2007

We had to pull-out, re-dig and replace the little pool in this area. Well, hubby did it for me. Last year we had a 20 gal. tub submerged in the ground, and it looked SO good (pics of it are in last year's album, and I added one to this year's album too), but we should have leveled the ground around it rather than sloping it upward 'cause the rocks fell in all the time and rain washed dirt into it.

It was also hard to clean this Spring (And what a mess it was to clean-out even though I tried to keep it covered). Last Fall I had to rescue a baby mole from it before it filled with melted snow and rain and this Spring I had to rescue a baby snake out of the water...yuck, yuck, yuck to both. Even though this pool is only 10 gal. larger (30 gal.), it's more shallow so cleaning it will be much easier.

I still have to finish the landscaping around it, and I'll be adding 2 of our large goldfish to it.

My WaterlilyMy Waterlily
The waterlily I started inside (a week ago?) is now sporting some tiny pads. *grin* I saved it in time from the goldfish. The orange bloom is a fake. It's what the waterlily blooms will look like though. It's a pond marker.

Stupid Me [Mar. 24th, 2007|08:41 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood |stupid...]

I should have known better than to try and put a waterlily plant into a tub with 5 large goldfish.  *sigh*  I've had enough experience with them to know this.

The sprouted 2 bulbs were floating on top of the water this eve. instead of being in the netted bag at the bottom of the tub.  I guess they picked around on the moss that was covering them and pulled all of it out of the netted bag.  At least the filler material was still in the bag along with the rocks that weight it down.

Even if they hadn't done this there's no way they would have let a plant grow - they'd eat it as soon as sprouts and leaves started to form.  I got the bulbs out in time.

I found a smaller, blue tub in the basement that I'm putting the waterlilies  in and then setting it along side the goldfish under the full spectrum lights.

My First Planting [Mar. 24th, 2007|02:36 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | lethargic]

I just decided to drop the Waterlily that I bought last week into the goldfish tub inside instead of waiting for the weather to get warmer so I can put it outside.    The white one you see in the picture is a fake one.  The plant came with a silk Waterlily the color of the blooms (orange) to be to attached to the plant so one can find it again.  No problem in this tub...lol

I also remembered that I stored some open and unopened seed packets in the fridge from last year.  I certainly won't be buying anymore seed this year.  I have yet to get my seeds started as it is.

I'm going to try and rig-up the plant light fixture somehow to the bottom of one of the shelves in my new greenhouse on rollers.  I still haven't found a pic of it anywhere to post.  I could just take a pic of mine, but I wouldn't be able to get the whole thing in the pic where I have it now in the small, enclosed front porch.

So Far... [Mar. 20th, 2007|10:31 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | lethargic]

So far I've bought...

___ A waterlily Sioux  (orange) to grow  in one of our little, water gardens outside where our  huge goldfish live in the Summer.
___Box of wildflower seed mix esp. for butterflies and hummingbirds
___A strawberry plant (Quinault)
___Seed packet of pepper (Sweet Banana)
___A couple of raspberry bushes (Red Latham)
___Packet of huge sunflower seeds (Tall Gold)
___Packet of mixed flower seeds
___Seed packets of:
Dill, Chives, Rosemary, Cilantro, Spearmint, and Sweet Basil (I want to plant a container herb garden outside this year.)

And now, I need to get busy starting the seeds inside.  I'll get to use my new green house on rollers.  I'm not real anxious to get started.  :o(

I'll try and find a pic of my new indoor green house on the net later.

A New Season Of Gardening Is Upon Me [Mar. 5th, 2007|11:46 am]
[mood | confused]

The Spring and Summer of 2007 is not far away.

Hopefully, 2007 will bring me more surprises and happiness in gardening and observing the visitors to it.  When the time comes, I tend to use this journal more than any others that I've created for notes and photos from my garden.

I can't decide what I want to do this year - veggie container gardening again with improvement taken from the mistakes that I learned from last year, concentrate on just flower gardening or both.  I can't imagine getting as obsessed this year as I did last year with veggie container gardening though.  But, I'll always plant a tomato plant or two either in a container, next to the house or both.

I'll plan it as I go along I guess.  I've never been a plan ahead gardener in the middle of winter  with notes and graphs of plans anyway.   I kinda fly by the seat of my dirty pants and walk my own path in my garden clogs.  ;o)

I really need to be making some newspaper starter pots I guess, but for now I don't know what for.

http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/frugal/msg0515493628236.html

I bought a little, portable greenhouse at the end of last year's growing season that's on wheels and it's sitting inside the enclosed porch that I've never used yet.

I do know one thing - these things are going back outside again.  It's been a chore keeping all 5 of  them disease-free in a small 20 gal. tub.  It's been a major weekly siphon chore that hubby's been helping me with.

Snow Expected [Nov. 10th, 2006|09:36 am]

Today we'll see our first snowflakes, but no accumulation.

But, I bet that'll draw the birds.  I have a couple of suet blocks I've been saving for when it snows.  Right now all the feeders are empty since 2 days ago we had a temp of 78 degrees.  It was mad to have warm weather like that in November.  Plus, the squirrels were being pests and eating all the seed anyway.  I'm going to have to work on that little problem.

I was surprised to see a hummingbird at one of my feeders yesterday after a couple or so days of seeing none. We've gone from temps in the low 80s to temps in the 40s only a few days later - Good old, unpredictable Midwest weather.
